2009-10 Second Mile Giving

at Worthington United Methodist Church

Dear Friends:
The Outreach Committee of Worthington Church is committed to serving our brothers and sisters in need in our community, state, nation, and world. Our congregation has provided incredible support to local charities through our Bag of Blessings program, including NNEMAP, New Life United Methodist Church, United Methodist Children’s Home, YWCA Family Center, and the new Worthington Food Pantry. During the holidays you selflessly provided boxes of food to the hungry through Bethlehem on Broad Street, and blankets to Faith Mission. Some of you are serving the needs of others when you prepare sandwiches for the homeless or when you serve hot meals at New Life or the Family Center. Many of our members regularly donate blood to the Red Cross, build homes for Habitat for Humanity, or walk the streets of Columbus and Worthington supporting the CROP Walk. We send out mission teams on work projects both locally and nationally. This year we reached out to an Iraqi refugee family and welcomed them to our country and our community. I know God blesses each of you when you give your time and love to God’s children who are less fortunate.

We also have the opportunity to show our love and support of those in need through our financial gifts. Each year the Outreach Committee selects projects to support financially by Second Mile Giving, in the name of Christian love. These projects were selected based on a congregational survey taken in 2008, and the past year’s giving history. Second Mile Giving is over and above your pledge to support the church’s operating budget. This year seven projects were selected. Information about each one may be found on the attached brochure. The undesignated funds allocation is used to fund our internal outreach programs, taking pressure off the operating budget, and also to bolster the financial support to the seven causes. The Committee is asking you to prayerfully consider supporting one or more of the listed programs or the undesignated fund during the coming year. In 2008-9, our project goals were met and we are very grateful for your support. Please remember, though, that WUMC is counting on us to support the ministries of our church, and our annual apportionments with our pledge to the operating budget. That commitment is our top priority, and the first mile for monetary contributions to our church. We hope that as you are able, you will also try to help the second mile effort to be Christ’s hands and feet in the world.

God bless each of you,
The Outreach Committee

Second Mile Giving Envelopes are available in the Sanctuary pew pockets. The campaign for Second Mile Giving is an opportunity to support projects recommended through our Outreach Committee that touch lives locally, regionally, nationally and globally. It is part of our commitment as a congregation to take action and serve those in need. This brochure highlights the projects we seek to support.
