Our Ministries
United Methodist Women
The UMW Purpose
"The organized unit of the United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church."
Support National and World Missions
Worthington United Methodist Women have a long and prestigious history. Our emphasis is on support of missions, primarily to women and children throughout the world and here at home. Through participation with the national organization of the United Methodist Women, the Worthington UMW supports worldwide missions and programs including:
-
Helping to build schools, hospitals and clinics in other countries, as well as here in the U.S.;
-
Funding care for street children and "throw-away" children, establishing after school programs and orphanages, and providing hot lunch programs;
-
Supporting work to provide safe and fresh water supplies and portable water systems in many third-world countries;
-
Providing salary support of lay workers and ministers involved in the mission field locally, nationally, and globally, and helping to enable them to translate the Bible into the language of the people they serve;
-
Providing socio-economic development and medical relief for women in the Middle East and the U.S.;
Here in our own community and surrounding areas, the Worthington UMW helps fund, among other programs:
-
NNEMAP Food Pantry
-
Assistance League of Metro Columbus;
-
Columbus' South Side Settlement;
-
United Methodist Children's Home;
-
New Life United Methodist Church clothing room;
-
Choices;
-
YWCA Columbus;
-
WUMC Camper Fund and WUMC Youth Work Camp
-
WUMC Children's Play Center;
In addition to individual contributions from its members, the Worthington UMW uses a variety of methods to raise funds, and relies on support from church members and the community. Below are a few ways you can help. For information on other fundraisers throughout the year, please see the church newsletter,
The Messenger.
Kroger Gift Card Program
We receive a portion of all money spent at Kroger Stores and paid for with gift cards purchased from the UMW. To obtain a card, see a UMW representative in the church lobby after Sunday services, or contact Roberta Newcomer at 614-840-0650. Then stop at the Kroger customer service desk to add the dollar amount you want to spend to the card, shop as usual, and use the gift card to pay for your purchases. The cards are re-loadable, so you can add more money at any time at the Kroger customer service desk.
Trifles n Treasures
Annual church tag sale
October 13 from 8:30 am - 1:00 pm
Annual Church Tag Sale - Trifles & Treasures. Saturday, October 13
The Dorcas Circle plans this sale every year but many church members and community groups such as Jeff Sweet's Boy Scout troop and the youth group, are instrumental in making the sale run smoothly. We are looking for a few good men and women to help the week before the sale and during the sale on Saturday. If you like to tinker with electronics or poke around boxes of treasures, please call Joyce Tate at 436-9430.
If you have items to donate, such as furniture in good repair, antiques and collectibles, garden pieces, and fresh linens, please call Debbie Varble at 888-3743 for more information. If you have space in your garage to store items prior to the sale, give Debbie a call.
The money raised goes to help fund global and local missions assisting families in need.
UMW Membership
Membership in Worthington United Methodist Women is open to all women, of all ages, who indicate a desire to belong and to participate in the global missions of the church. Guided by the leadership of the
UMW Executive Board, the organization is made up of various small units called Circles, which meet monthly for spiritual programs and fellowship. In addition to participating in fundraising activities, circle members serve the church community by hosting Sunday coffee hours and other social gatherings, providing homebound remembrances, and assisting church committees where needed.
Worthington United Methodist Church Circles
Several circles are available to accommodate women with different interests and to give more opportunities to participate. Below is a list of our current circles and contact information. For specific meeting dates and/or additional information, please see our monthly church newsletter,
