Collection Policy

1/95, rev. 1/2010

Purpose

This policy is to serve as a guide to the Library Committee and the Church Staff in selecting and suggesting materials to add and/or remove from the Library Collection. It is a general guide for developing a Library Collection that serve the needs of the members of all ages of the Worthington United Methodist Church for supplemental materials for Biblical scholarship, spiritual growth and Christian living.

Basis for Selection

The collection will contain materials that reflect and support the Christian teaching of the Worthington United Methodist Church. Materials will be collected to assist the individual growth of members as well as materials to support the Sunday School curriculum, the pastoral counseling and teaching, the United Methodist Women's program, the youth program, and other identified needs within the church. All types of materials will be collected including books, magazines, videos, DVDs, CDs and cassette tapes. Materials for all ages and reading levels will be included.
The following standards will be applied:
  1. Biblical - Is the Bible the basic authority for what is written? Is the book true to the Bible? Are the facts accurate? Is the doctrine in harmony with the teaching of the church?
  2. Christian living standard - Is the Christian living presented Christ like? Is it relevant to today's living? Is it in harmony with the teaching of the church?
  3. Content standard - What is the quality and quantity of the content? What kind of coverage of the subject? Is the content of importance to the library users? Is the content relevant?
  4. Writing standard - Does the book read easily? Does the book have popular appeal?
  5. Production standard - Quality of cover, binding, paper, type face...
  6. Cost - Is the price realistic?
  7. Subject matter - Do we need another book on this subject? How much depth do we want on this subject?

Source of materials

Materials will be added to the collection by purchase and by gifts. The committee will work with the UMW Reading Chair, the Director of Christian Education, and the Teacher Resource Center committee to coordinate purchases and access to the materials.
Purchases
Requests for purchase of materials will be reviewed by the Library Committee before the material is purchased.
Gifts
Donations of materials to the church library will be accepted with the understanding that they will be reviewed by the library committee and only items that fit the policy and are determined to be needed by the library will be added to the collection. Unwanted gifts will be disposed of through the used book table at Trifles and Treasures or other proper channel. We do not accept materials that have mold or mildew!
Memorials
