November 2008

A Dramatic Increase

With the change in the Sunday morning schedule, we have experienced an exciting increase in participation in Adult Sunday School. The Adult Council, chaired by Kristen Welcome-McKee, planned well for this moment. And their planning has paid off. We have six times as many adults studying together on Sunday morning. And it is not too late to join. All Classes are open.

Choose from one of the following, and let your life in Christ grow.
  1. Disciple I: Facilitated by Rev. Alan Sippel, located in South Fellowship Hall, directly below the Sanctuary. The DISCIPLE Bible Study program is designed to develop strong Christian local churches through the in-depth study of Scripture. Through DISCIPLE, persons are strengthened in their faith and guided into service and ministry. Disciple I's strong, biblically nourished leadership will help you grow in vitality and Christian discipleship. The Disciple I class will review the Bible in its entirety, encouraging group discussion of Scripture based on careful study and preparation, moving through the biblical story from Creation to the New Jerusalem. This class will run for 34 weeks. Join us!
  2. Book Study: Faith in Literature: Facilitated by Kristen Welcome-McKee, located in Staff Lounge (next to the Nursery, off the Commons). This class is a discussion-based study using literature as a vehicle to talk about our faith. This course will alternate between faith-based fiction and non-fiction as subject matter. The class will begin a new book every four to six weeks. Cure for the Common Life, by Max Lucado, is their current book, to be followed later in November by The Shepherd's Prayer, by Richard Barry. Join us!
  3. Loving Your Neighbor: Understanding Your Neighbor's Faith: Located in the Potter Chapel. This class is a review of the many different religions practiced by our neighbors in our community and around the world. The class features guest speakers who will explain and answer questions about their faith practices. Join us!
  4. Becoming Well-Versed: Facilitated by Rev. David Hoffman, located in Room 317 (Conference Room, overlooking the Chapel). This class studies the Lectionary readings for the week. All four passages are discussed with an emphasis on one particular passage each week. The study is discussion-based, using probing questions to direct the study. Join us for a thoughtful discussion of the liturgy!
  5. Open Door Class Facilitated by class members, located in Browning Lounge (just north of Potter Chapel). Open Door is an interactive class that examines what it means to live in today's world as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Through lively discussion of Scripture, inspirational readings, and informative speakers, the class addresses contemporary issues and current events from a spiritual perspective. In 2008-2009, we will consider a number of social issues in relation to our faith journey, examining them through the lens of the Social Principles of the United Methodist Church and Bible study. Join us as we explore how Jesus calls us to action in the world today!
All classes meet from 10:10 until 10:50 on Sunday morning.
